What is Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling based martial art. We practice without the traditional kimono (jacket and pants), which allows for faster action. There is no striking, the aim is to control people on the ground. Jiu-Jitsu is a useful tool for self defence, and can help grow confidence and meet new friends.

Who takes the Classes?

Our children’s classes are led by David, Stephani & Tyler who have extensive teaching experience in sports and with children. Our goal is to not only provide a fun and friendly environment, but keep the classes productive.

All of our teachers are all first aid qualified.

What about Grading?

Although grading isn’t a main focus at Balance and while we don’t wear the traditional belts while we train, we present them on our ‘grading days’ as a symbol to represent our progress in the sport.

This will be done each term and we will base our gradings on:

- Consistent attendance.

- Improvement in skills.

- Being a good teammate and training partner.

-Listening and attempting to learn and grow as a student.

For under 16s, the grading criteria is as follows:

Are there Competitions?

Competing is optional. Several competitions are held around the country and the team competes as frequently as they can. Competitors will be matched up with people their own size and skill to test their abilities under pressure. There are rules and regulations set in place at the competitions and you will get support from the instructors and the team.

Children’s safety is important and we advise gaining experience at training and learning the basics before competing.
